I want to tell you about how I was influenced to begin and continue this fascinating journey of formulating Natural Skin Care!
My first trip to Hawaii is when I learned about Kukui Nut Oil. As I was getting older, I became allergic to so many products. When I learned about Kukui Nut Oil, my skin changed forever! Of all the ingredients I have used, Kukui Nut Oil is the most impressive. I can't be without it! Here at Pink Coral, I have incorporated this wonderful oil in many of my formulations so that our skin can benefit from these wonderful properties. I recently made my own formulation for Kukui Nut Oil Soap. After 3 formulations, it is just right!
Kukui Nut Oil has been used for centuries in Hawaii. The Kukui Nuts come from the Candlenut Tree, which was first brought to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers. The Candlenut Tree is now Hawaii ‘s official state tree, and the Hawaiian meaning for Kukui is ‘enlightenment’. This nut is so full of oil that it was used to provide light in their huts and to find their way in the dark. A stick was inserted in the middle of the kukui nut and when lit it burned for a very long time.
There were also many spiritual and practical uses for this oil, which include cooking, an adhesive, dyes and pigments, medicines, and nuts for lei-making, assist with fire-making, healing and tattooing. The wood from the candlenut tree was made into storage containers, and its buoyant wood was used as floats.
While the oil is cold pressed from the nut and used for many things, the nuts are also polished and made into beautiful leis, which symbolizes enlightenment, protection, and peace. The colors of the kukui nut also have different meanings.
Kukui Nut Oil is an exceptional moisturizer, and quickly absorbs and penetrates into the deepest layers of the skin, locking in moisture and protecting the skin while leaving a silky-smooth non-greasy feeling. It hydrates dry or damaged skin exceptionally well, leaving even the roughest and driest skin feeling smooth and soft. Kukui Nut Oil contains Vitamins A, C, E, has anti-inflammatory properties, and provides antioxidants that help to protect the skin. Kukui Nut Oil is for all skin types, even those with sensitive skin. It has shown to be helpful for burns – including sunburn, windburn, radiation burns, and heat induced burns, eczema, dry and chapped skin, psoriasis, mature and prematurely aged skin, acne, scars, and lesions.
Kukui Nut Oil contains high levels in both Omega-6 (linoleic acid) and Omega-3 (linolenic acid). It has been shown to reduce the skin’s sensitivity to the sun’s UV rays and protect the skin from sun damage. Because of the immense healing and rejuvenating benefits of Kukui Nut Oil and its many traditional uses, it continues to be one of Hawaii’s rich natural and cultural treasures.
